15 Lessons On Building An Epic Community

Hello Deep Divers,

When the pandemic hit, so many of us got it in our heads that we were supposed to create content, build a following, and become influencers.

But so many of us are longing for slower, deeper, and even smaller experiences. We rather have a tight-knit community of people who are interested in the same things as us—and not just because the algorithm has brought them to our page.

It reminds me of a quote I heard once, “Great, you’re an influencer. but what are you influencing people to do?”

Unlike becoming an influencer by building a following, building community takes much longer, but it also lasts longer. And, in my experience, it can be much more powerful.

I am excited to share today's Deep Dive Class with you. I wanted to bring as much value as possible because I am incredibly passionate about this topic. It has deeply impacted my life and business.

Below I share 15 of my best tips on building a community that is authentic, sustainable and joy-filled.

So buckle up, because I go DEEP with this week's class. In fact, today’s Deep Dive Class might be the deepest we've gone yet.

As always, after listening to the audio and reading the journaling prompt I've included below, if you have any questions I am here to help. I really want this to be a two-way conversation.

Big love,

D

My 15 Tips (Listed Out)

Hit play to hear the greatest lessons I’ve learned over the years about community building. For your convenience, here's a quick list:

  1. Start with your beliefs and values. Find the DNA of your community.

  2. What community structure best suits you? (Mastermind, Guru, Leader, etc)

  3. Find your Lil: a kind, smart and very honest friend.

  4. Be fluid. It takes years to really understand your community.

  5. Less is more. Followers ARE NOT the same thing as community.

  6. Be patient and compassionate with yourself.

  7. Create opportunities for deep listening within your community.

  8. Double down on specific humans.

  9. Let people leave.

  10. Leave room for your own evolution (“Niche of One”).

  11. Connect members. Foster long-term connections without you.

  12. Empower members by letting them lead.

  13. Remember: you are templating success and leadership.

  14. Let your community keep you consistent and accountable.

  15. Co-create with your community.

Optional Journaling Prompt(s)

Whether you already have a community or you’re thinking about starting one in the future, take some time and explore what values and beliefs you want to position as the pillars of your community.

For example, when I built Artist Morning I had 5 pillars:

  1. Everyone is creative. All of us are artists in some form.

  2. We are stronger together and we have more in common than we realize.

  3. Kindness is a superpower. And kind is NOT the same thing as nice.

  4. All of our feelings matter. As artists, each feeling gives us access to more creativity.

  5. Play is one of the most spiritual and sacred practices available to humans.
